Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
